2nd July – How the Other Half Lives

So, when I started writing this blog it was around 8.30pm Monday evening in San Francisco, but it London it was 4.30am Tuesday morning. Goodbye sleeping time – hmmm, this was going to mess with our bodies a bit.

When we checked in (declining a $700 upgrade to Business Class) we were told we weren’t seated together and that they would change this for us at the gate. By the looks of things this had happened to more than one group. Andy was rather disgruntled at this, particularly by the fact we might not get a window.

Eventually we went to the desk at the gate and got our tickets – Andy pointed out they weren’t window seats, the guy pointed out we were in Business Class. Say what now?? We still haven’t quite figured out how we managed to get bumped up but it was the BEST THING EVER (sorry, slight excitement).

I was lucky enough to have this happen to me once before, when I was 18 – this was Andy’s first time in business class. It’s so fabulous to share this with someone, we spent the whole of take-off giggling and feeling like imposters.

Where to start about this flight. We had so much leg room, chairs with adjustable everything, including an in built massage function and a completely reclining bed, We had personal service by smiling staff who called us Miss Rossiter and Mr Trimmings and asked us all about our holiday. They decked out our tray tables with white tablecloths and we sat there reclining, drinking wine while there was an absolutely stunning sunset outside. We were given warm towels, cashew nuts, a complete ‘sleep kit’ and an incredible three course meal. And then we slept in our completely flat beds!

First course   Sleepy time

The whole thing was very surreal and after 11 hours and a pretty solid 6 hours sleep we were in Zurich, for a quick transfer to London.  Nothing remarkable any more, just normal economy! This flight was only an hour and a half and soon we were in Heathrow. The tube to our hostel was hard, trying to stay awake. But eventually we were there, for a relaxing nothing evening. A big day of theatre tomorrow!
