Thursday 14th June–Travelling day to Prague

Again, today will be a short blog inspired by lots of travelling and bad weather! We were up nice and early this morning, ready to leave for our bus to Prague at 8.20am. The sun had just begun to shine and we were all in high spirits. It is amazing how much joy we can all get from a little bit of sun at the moment.

The three hour bus ride to Prague was very pleasant – the seats were squishy, comfy AND reclined and much rest was enjoyed by all. I personally had my iPod on the whole time and switched between watching the green countryside and catching up on some sleep. About half an hour before arriving in Prague it started to rain – I probably don’t need to mention that we are all very over this weather by now and our cheery optimism and ‘oh well’ attitudes are certainly getting tested (particular when all of us packed for warm sunny days and have been stuck wearing clothes we expected to wear perhaps once?).

We all stood at the bus station in Prague, in the rain, feeling rather sorry for ourselves. A half an hour train trip brought us to our apartments. When I say ‘apartments’ I really do mean that – ours has two bedrooms, a kitchen, a lounge room and importantly, a laundry AND a proper shower. Its very homely here, we can almost imagine that we live permanently in Prague.

After some initial settling in the whole group headed to the local pub for lunch – I had braised beef with carrots and it was very yummy indeed (of course, the usual mix of brown and white on the plate… no meal here can be served without some form of potatoes). Then a quick orientation walk of the city. The rain was beginning to clear up and I can tell already I am going to love it here. This city is beautiful - even with the grey skies it has so much character. We have two full days here, plenty time to enjoy it properly – and to top it off, the next few days are forecast to be sunny. I don’t have too many photos to share today, we were all holding out for the promise of blue skies.

After our quick little orientation walk we all trundled off to a cafe run by disabled people – Intrepid contribute money with every drink we buy. I ordered a hot white chocolate and an apple strudel. The hot chocolate was basically white chocolate fondue and I only managed half of it, the apple strudel on the other hand was wonderful.

By now it was 5pm and it was the general consensus of the girls in my apartment that we should take advantage of our kitchen and make some actual salad. This meant a quick trip to the grocery store, then back home for some healthy eating and laundry washing.  After that, Dan and Sarah came and visited our apartment for another card playing night – a bit of 500, then they taught us Whist which I enjoyed very much indeed. Card playing was followed by discussions of travelling and politics and we didn’t get to bed until midnight. We plan to make up for our night in over the next two days – tomorrow we attack the sight seeing head on!

  1. I may not have been commenting, but I have been reading :P The salad looks like a much needed, refreshing change. Hope you get some sunshine. It's cold, windy, and rainy here.
