Today continued my trend of lazy nothingness (which in turn means a not so interesting blog. Things start getting busy again tomorrow, stick with me now!). Downstairs for breakfast today at 9am and then out into Salzburg again, dressed in jeans and a jumper in preparation for the forecasted approaching thunderstorm. Ulrike and Franziska committed themselves quickly to a day of shopping, but I couldn’t do this without feeling guilty – there was still so much city to enjoy and I did not want to hide in shopping malls.
As a result, Ulrike and Franziska headed off and I trundled after Franz Josef…. a short walk and then we were sitting outside a cafe, eating and drinking (this, you will see, is pretty much the theme for the day). Eventually Franz Josef and I parted ways and I wandered over to the Mirabell gardens. Last time I was here was with on the Sound of Music tour with Chris and Julie… many of the shots during ‘Do Re Mi’ were filmed here and we had fun trying to replicate them in 2005 (I have the videos still). That movie is so ingrained in my childhood, I couldn’t help but hum my closest approximation to every song possible as I walked amongst the pretty flowers.
Time then for more wandering back into the town – the forecast thunderstorm apparently decided to turn into hot, sunny, perfectly cloudless weather and I was very much regretting my clothing choices by now. The hope of a breeze certainly influenced my decision to next head up to Hoehen Salzburg, the castle that stands in the background of almost every photo taken. Having been up there before, I knew the castle itself was nothing of note inside, but I was keen to see the view again and cool down a little.
The view hadn’t changed since 2005 (funny that), but in contrast, this time I had some spare hours to sit and enjoy it a little more! Sitting down at the cafe overlooking the whole city, I ordered another aperol (apparently I can make these at home, must do that) and a ‘wuerstelteller’ (sausage plate – sausages, potatoes and cabbage, very Austrian indeed). And then I did what I’ve been doing so well this week – I ate, I drank, I looked, I thought, I relaxed. I hope that perhaps one day I can bring someone close here and enjoy doing the same thing with their company too :)
Soon it was time to meet up with the host family so I headed back down into the city where we… wait for it, sat down and had a few drinks. After that it was time to meander back to the car and soon we were headed back home (but not before quickly sitting and drinking at the hostel first!!). About 5 minutes after we left (around 5pm now) the promised thunderstorm hit. It was very impressive I must say, even people with umbrellas were huddled up against walls not moving, the wind and rain were that strong.
It didn’t last longer than 15 minutes however, and we soon had perfect weather again for the three hour drive back to Knittelfeld. I managed to stay awake this time… watching the Austrian landscape with the setting sun and soundtrack of Grouplove, Seeker Lover Keeper and Washington was very enjoyable indeed (even if it perhaps should have been Mozart on my ipod instead!)
Getting home at 8pm, I had hoped to pack quickly and have an early night. Yet with one thing and another (included some sitting and drinking and eating outside) it it somehow almost midnight and here I am still tapping away. Off to Vienna tomorrow, mostly a travelling day but then my tour starts and these blogs get more eventful again!
