The REAL beginning – Saturday 2nd July

Things I have forgotten: Pyjamas.

Breakfast was on the house so I had a bit of everything – toast, a croissant, a fried egg, friend pork sausages, pikelets with maple syrup, fruit….and some Thai noodles for good measure.

Kelly and I then spent some time trying to figure out where on earth we wanted to go. In the end we just found the biggest place on the map and decided to go there. It seemed like a good strategy.

The taxi ride into the city cost us more than it should have – we accidentally took some chartered taxi thing that cost us FOUR DOLLARS each. Terrible.

So off to the Grand Palace. We got picked up on our awful disrespectful clothes pretty quickly – off to get some highly attractive hire skirts and t-shirts first and then into the palace temple. This was rather impressive, shiny and decorative and Kelly and I took lots of  photos before realising that our photos weren’t conveying the shininess in the least (we just had  way too many photos of similar looking temples).

A stroll through the palace grounds next and a pit stop to grab an ice-cream and mango juice. Then we eagerly gave back our hire clothes and headed out into big Bangkok.

Bangkok really is a big dirty busy city and Kelly and I wandered around for a while trying to figure out where we were and feeling generally overwhelmed by it all. Then we found the shopping street and all was better again.

Khao Sahn road. Bought: Pair of bathers ($10). New sunglasses ($6). Top to sleep in ($2). Hippy pants because I can ($8).

I want to voice at this moment how much I dislike haggling. It requires a certain amount of assertiveness than I do not possess and as a result Kelly did most of my haggling for me whilst I nodded along on the side. I have, however, become quite good at the “no I don’t want it so I’m walking away” move. Works a treat.

Basil and chicken noodles for lunch, plus a Chang beer because I thought I should. Buy Chang beer, tick. Now I don’t have to do it ever again. More shopping ensued afterward.

Then Kelly and I were bad little tourists and went back to  the hotel to have a nap. Oops. At least we were nice and fresh to meet our tour group at 6pm.

So our tour group. Kelly and I are definitely… young. There is one other guy who is a few months younger then us, the rest I would say are early to late 30s? A bit different to the young party type group who was sitting next to us but still…nice? Our tour guide also seems nice enough, perhaps not the best English, but she seems fine.

Dinner together was uneventful. It is the Thai election tomorrow and funnily enough that means a complete ban on alcohol after 6pm the night before – they don’t want people foggy headed when voting? Khao Sahn road is usually a drunken backpackers haven, tonight….they serve water. Party on a Saturday night in Bangkok!

After dinner Kelly and I did tag along with Paul the American and Andy the Brit boy to drink rum and beer in his hotel room instead. We talked about movies, politics, alcohol, musicals, lady boys and generally had a very pleasant evening.

Tomorrow morning the proper tour begins. A day In Bangkok before epic train ride extraordinaire. Internet again on Monday! Off to sleep now in my new $2 giant strawberry covered pyjama top!
